Is Witchcraft Evil?
What Does The Bible Say About That?
Witchcraft-a: the use of sorcery or magic, b: communication with the devil or with a familiar.
- Leviticus 19:31 “Do not turn to mediums or consult spiritists, or you will be defiled by them; I am the LORD your God.
- Revelation 21:8 But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars–they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.
- 2 Chronicles 33:6 He sacrificed his children in the fire in the Valley of Ben Hinnom, practiced divination and witchcraft, sought omens, and consulted mediums and spiritists. He did much evil in the eyes of the LORD, arousing his anger.
- Deuteronomy 18:9-14 When you enter the land the LORD your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there. Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD; because of these same detestable practices the LORD your God will drive out those nations before you. You must be blameless before the LORD your God. The nations you will dispossess listen to those who practice sorcery or divination. But as for you, the LORD your God has not permitted you to do so.
- Galatians 5:18-21 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.
Answer: According to the first verse listed (Lev 19:31), God flat out says don’t turn to those who practice magic. I don’t think it can be any clearer than what is said in these verses. God clearly says there is no hope if you trust in magic or sorcery or witchcraft rather than Him. On the subject of exposing yourself to witchcraft, I believe it is not Christ-like and is considered a sin to purposefully expose yourself or engage in witchcraft. In regards to reading books or watching movies, I believe that the more you expose yourself the less sensitive you become. As Christians I think it is a bad thing to become desensitized to things like witchcraft. Revelations 21:8 says that those who dabble in magic will burn. I don’t think that is a risk anybody should ever be willing to take.
Now, we could go into the practice of astrology (the divination of the supposed influences of the stars and planets on human affairs and terrestrial events by their positions and aspects) aka, your “sign” and how it is considered both witchcraft and idolatry (immoderate attachment or devotion to something). In fact, we could even go into all the things that are considered idolatry (more than just worshiping golden idols) but it would take me all day to find all the verses just in the old testament where God calls idolatry an abomination. Long story short, the bible is very clear that magic and witchcraft are considered an abomination and are in no way acceptable for Christians to practice. Like always, I encourage you to research it for yourself and talk about it with others.
