What do I mean when I say guard your heart? I mean don’t let yourself fall in love with someone unless you are sure of them and that they have potential to be your future spouse. Allowing yourself to fall in love with just whomever you go on a date with is a dangerous business because everytime you allow someone in your heart, if they leave you, they take a piece of you with them. 

Guarding your heart does not mean shutting out all connection and emotions, it simply means that you need to keep your emotions in check. Don’t let the twitterpated feelings cloud your judgment and allow you to fall in love with the wrong person. There will still be some emotions involved but don’t allow that person to steal your heart when they don’t deserve it. 

This also means don’t allow yourself to give up everything to whomever you date. Save some pieces of you for your spouse. One of the biggest components to guarding your heart, is saving yourself intimately for your spouse only. Wait until you are married to give away that most sacred part of you. Not just anybody deserves all of you, only the one God has molded and set apart for you deserves that part of you. 

Giving yourself away to someone before marriage allows your heart to completely fall for them and leaves no part of you unscathed should that relationship fail. Then when the time comes and you do find the one God has designated for you, then you will have scars from previous relationships that will always haunt you. If that previous relationship ended badly you will wonder deep down if maybe your spouse will be the same way or struggle with the same issues. 

Guarding your heart is incredibly important to ensuring that you can allow your spouse your whole self rather than bits and pieces leftover from past relationships. A big component to guarding your heart is also staying constant in prayer for guidance, making sure you are following God’s plan for your life. Sometimes God allows a relationship with the wrong person for the right reasons. Those relationships are there for you to learn a lesson and grow yourself.
